Our Home Builds

Each home we build has a story behind it, and a family we have helped. As we continue to complete our new website, we will be adding more details for each.

Michelle Seay July 2016

My name is Michelle Seay. I am a lifelong resident of Union County, mother of 3 beautiful daughters, and 5 wonderful grandchildren.

I became a single mom in 2009. In 2012, I was working in a salon located in Hiawassee, GA. One of our clients who was involved with Habitat approached me and suggested I attend their Habitat for Humanity Family meeting. I took her advice, went to the meeting, and learned that I actually could qualify for a habitat home. After the process was complete, I was informed that due to circumstances with my job and how the income was reported I would not be chosen. It was disappointing but looking back at it, God knew when I would need it most.

Fast forward to 2014. New job, my youngest daughter, her daughter, and myself living in a small 2 bedroom rental. The rental was an older home that was impossible to heat, and had mold issues. Between the rent, and light bill being high, I was struggling financially. I remembered the statement the habitat volunteer said, “If your work situation ever changes reapply”, so that is what I did. After going through the process I received an email that said they had chosen 2 families, and I was one of them. They said they had never picked 2 families at one time before. The other family’s house would be built first then ours after that. We were so happy, and excited for the opportunity to have something that would meet our needs.

The home before mine took longer than expected. It was so hard not to let it worry me. But as I stated earlier, looking back at it now, God had his hand in that too. I started working at the local habitat restore to accumulate my sweat hours needed. My home was built under the supervision of Bryan Thomas. Under his supervision, everything was done correct and in a timely matter. Bryan and the team who built my home was well worth the wait. My home passed inspection with flying colors at every juncture. I felt very confident with him and the team he had assembled.

It has been a blessing for my family. I told them when they interviewed me that I did not want a hand out but rather a hand up. That is exactly what I got. Habitat for Humanity gave a single mom with grandchildren living in the home, an opportunity to own a home that is affordable and perfect. My family is very thankful and blessed to be a Habitat for Humanity homeowner.
