• I pay too much for rent, e.g., 40 percent or more of my income
I do not qualify for a conventional mortgage.

• Able to make monthly payments between $250 and $300 for mortgage principal,
real estate taxes and insurance, plus another $150-$200 for utilities (not including
phone or cable TV). Average cost is about $450 per month. (Based on a $45,000
home with a 20 year mortgage.)
• Able to make a $250 down payment.
- WILLINGNESS
TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HABITAT:
• Willingness of each applicant to contribute at least 150 "sweat equity"
hours
• Willingness to work with fellow homeowners and Habitat volunteers
• Willingness to participate actively in Habitat for Humanity events

WHAT
DOES
A HABITAT HOUSE COST?
Habitat houses are affordable for low-income families because there is no profit
included in the sale price and no interest charged on the mortgage. The average
Habitat house in Towns/Union Counties costs $45-50,000.
HOW ARE PARTNER
FAMILIES SELECTED?
Local families in need of decent shelter apply to our affiliate. Our Family Selection
Committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness
to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest
loan. We follow a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race
nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses. |
